The complete path from dating to married, with the one progression requirement most guides leave out.

Step 1 — Date someone first
Marriage runs through dating, not raw friendship. Since v0.14.0 every candidate has two separate tracks: a romantic route and a best friend route. You need to be on the romantic one.
All twelve candidates are listed on the characters page. One exception applies: Caldarus cannot be married until you complete the story quest "Breaking The Final Seal."
Step 2 — Reach 10 hearts, and Elsie comes to you
When you hit 10 hearts with the person you are dating, Elsie shows up on your farm and hands over the recipe for the Engagement Ring. Learning the recipe also triggers the in-game marriage tutorial, so you do not have to hunt for the next step.
Step 3 — The one gate nobody mentions: floor 100
The Engagement Ring recipe requires a material that you can only get by reaching floor 100 of the Mines. If you have been farming and romancing without going underground, this is the wall you will hit.
The good news is that it is the only such wall. The official wiki is explicit that this is the only progression-related limitation on marriage — there is no farmhouse upgrade requirement, no town rank requirement, nothing else.
Step 4 — Propose
Once the ring is crafted, hold it in your hand and interact with your partner. Holding it is what makes the unique "Discuss" prompt appear — without the ring equipped you will just get ordinary conversation.
Choosing Discuss plays a cutscene where the two of you talk about marriage, ending with two options: propose now, or postpone.
Step 5 — Pick a date that the game will accept
Patch v1.0.3 changed this, and it is recent enough that most guides still have it wrong: festival setup days can no longer be selected as wedding days. Those are Spring 14, Fall 7 and Winter 7.

After the wedding
- Your spouse moves into the farmhouse and switches to a different daily schedule.
- The next day you receive 3 pieces of your spouse's furniture in the mail — except for Juniper, who sends 4. Each spouse has their own special furniture, and they interact with it differently once you place it.
- Two weeks after the wedding, going to bed triggers a cutscene where you and your spouse can discuss having children.
- There is no divorce mechanic in version 1.0, and the wiki notes it is not known whether one is planned.
Where the official wiki is still thin
Worth knowing if you go source-hunting yourself: the official wiki's Marriage page currently carries a "Work in Progress" banner on its Basic Mechanics section, and there is no separate Wedding article at all — searching for one redirects you to the middle of the Marriage page. That is a large part of why this site exists.
